Modern door handles are generally standard sizes and should fit any door. If you're not sure if your new door handle will fit, try taking out the old one and determining the holes in its housing. This will help you buy the right door handle.

The easiest method to remove the door handle you have been using is to unscrew it from the door. Usually, a screwdriver is used. Some upvc door handles replacement handles come with an enclosure plate that hides the mounting screws. It is necessary to remove it to get to the screws. Once you've removed your old handle, make an outline of how the spindle is connected so that you can align it when you fit the new one.

Alternately, you can take off the door handle by uncrewing it from the latch mechanism. This is usually done using the screwdriver, but you'll need to find the small latch, which should be at the edge of the trim piece. After you have removed the latch, take the handle off the strike plate and then remove the latch off the door's edge.

Take off the Strike Plate

When you replace your handle, you'll also need to replace the latch plate, which holds the hole that the door's latch hooks into when it closes. The package the new handles come with will offer two options for latch plates - either a rectangular or a circular one (see the diagram above for the components of a door handle). If your current latch plate has a rectangular shape, switch it to a round one, so that the latch is able to hook into the strike plate in a way that makes the handle more comfortable to use.

The first step is to remove the screw that's holding the latch plate in place. The screws are typically tight and require a fair amount of force to loosen them. If you are able, it could be beneficial to have another person assist with this part.

After the screws are removed and the latch plate should pull out of the door easily. If the latch plate is stuck or refuses to move use a small file to scrape the edges. This can sometimes open the plate.

You can now move on to making the new door strike plate for installation. With the wood screws that were included with your new handles, attach the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Be cautious not to tighten too much the screws, as this can damage the strike plate.

If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in the correct position, try closing and opening the door to see whether it latches and closes correctly. If not you'll need to adjust the strike plate up or down, or even forward or back until the door shuts and latches properly.

If the door is moving or jiggling, it may be necessary to expand the hole for the latch in the strike plate. This is more frequent with older doors, but could also be caused by wear and tear, hinge mortises that are too shallow or the wrong size for the latch, or because of damage or a broken strike plate. If this is the case then you should use a filing made of metal instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Removing the Latch

The latch is a bent metal piece that slides in and out of a hole on the inside of your door. The latch moves forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into a hole in the door frame to keep the door closed. If your door is wobbling when you close, replacing the latch could be the only thing needed to correct the issue.

It's difficult to see the screws that secure the latch to the door, but there's usually a tiny slot on the trim plate that allows you to insert a screwdriver and take it off. After taking off the trim plate you will be able to pull off the latch, as well as the bolts that hold it in place and the spindle in position.

If the latch cannot be easily removed using a paperclip or tool to remove it from the handle mechanism. Place the item into the recessed slot of the latch and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel the that the latch and handle are beginning to split. You may need to repeat this procedure several times before you are able to remove the latch.

You should be able slide the new latch into its slot with no issues once you have removed the old one. Make use of the new screws to connect the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure that it is correctly positioned in the slot, and aligned with the screw chambers.

Before you install the new handle, make sure to measure your existing backset (the distance from the center of the large hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Also, make sure that the latch size on the new handle is a good match to this measurement.

You'll require a new cylinder for your lock if you're replacing the latch and handle or your existing one is damaged. If you're not replacing the locks, however, a new latch will fit into your existing recess, and work with the keys you have currently. Be sure to choose an entry point with rectangular cover plates that match your handles.
